English around the world has been considered as the most useful language, so many educational institutions integrate it into their curriculum. When we talk about English as a foreign language, it refers about learning a new language, which is different of the mother language, which is also not the language used in the student’s daily life where they do their activities. The process of learning English as a foreign language usually occurs within the classroom, where different types of controlled activities are carried out. Although this process occurs mostly in the educational environment, students can achieve a high degree of English language development.
So, the student has the opportunity to develop English language learning only during their training, when they are in educational institutions, and rarely in other types of activities, so, it sometimes limits in certain occasions that the student can finally be able to communicate in this language, in fact they reduce the language practice outside the classroom.
In the language teaching and learning process, the teacher and the learner represent two of the most important elements; the right or wrong development will largely depend on this process, which aim is to communicate accurately. These two components play a fundamental role in the learning process. Both depend on each other, and when one of them does not fulfill its function rightly, the Teaching-learning process does not reach the expected results.
Main learning roles
The teacher’s role
The teacher was long ago considered the sole and true owner of knowledge, and whose function was only to transmit this (Hernández &Valdez, 2010). However, at present and given the enormous advances in science and technology that role has changed, it went from being a leading role and sometimes leading to an accessible role that meets the function of guiding and improving the teaching process of the English language, using countless strategies aimed at developing the communicative part of the student (Guevara, 2000).
Learning the English language requires teachers fully trained in the appropriate methodology to develop a right process of language learning teaching, which has the ability to recognize different types of students, their ways of learning, their problems in learning, etc. (Juan & García, 2012).
According to Juan and García (2012), within the classroom in class, students will use the English language as long as the teacher considers the following aspects:
-Planning the procedures that require the use of the second language, according to the level of students and taking into account that, generally, they understand more than they are capable of producing.
Express yourself in the clearest and simplest way possible. Visually reinforce explanations and corrections through gestures, drawings, objects, the use of the blackboard, etc.
- Accustom students to using formulas idiomatic in English. Teaching and promotion of the use of general terms to improve their ability of communication.
- Familiarize students with the most common expressions used in the classroom, their frequency and coherent use. Also promote students' ability to infer meanings by logical ways such as context and associations.
If each of the aforementioned aspects is considered previously, it will be possible to provide the conditions suitable for permanent use and daily practice of English; it will also be possible to motivate the student within lifelong learning.
The Student’s role
It represents the most important component within the teaching and learning process of the English language given that once it ends, they will be the ones who can verify the learning results; that is the degree of communicative competence that has achieved by the student at the end of the course. The role of the student is one of the main changes that have been achieved in language teaching. They are the ones who play a more active role since they will be responsible for the level of development of the language skills and it is they who must give greater initiative within the classroom (Ordorica, 2010).
For students studying English as a language foreigner, one of the most important learning spaces is the classroom, within the premises which develops the learning process and that will be the favorable space, in which the necessary conditions will be met so that they can have the opportunity to communicate in the English language. (Juan & García,
2012).
